It didn’t take long for me to see that education is key to Malaysia’s ambitions. In the taxi from the airport, the radio carried a government public information advert extolling the virtues of early childhood education and encouraging listeners to ensure their pre-schoolers were enrolled in kindergarten from age 4.
When talking about entrepreneurs some people might focus on the first part of that definition, seeing them as business risk-takers in search of profit. The nature of education has undoubtedly evolved over the past decades. We have gradually moved away from a knowledge-transmission model and we now understand the need for experiential learning and the importance of cultivating soft skills that will stand our students in good stead when they enter the workforce.
In a time when we are constantly juggling multiple social media platforms, increasing news sources, and corporations and politicians seeking to sway our views one way or another, we are faced with a serious case of information overload.
Your students may know all the necessary formulae to solve complex mathematical problems. But will these abilities stand them in good stead when they enter the workplace?
