Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a CV?

CVs or resumes are the way that employers decide who to consider for jobs, work experience and internships. It’s the first step in a process that might also include an interview or other assessments. If your CV does not grab the attention of the employer, you won’t get through to the next round.

CVs are often used for other opportunities such as volunteer positions when there are lots of candidates to choose between.

When you are a student still in education, it can be hard to build a CV that stands out from all the other students or recent graduates who have similar experience to you. This course will make sure that you think hard about what the employer is looking for and how you can present your experience so far in the best way possible.

I am not applying for jobs or work experience yet. Should I still take this course?

Yes! It is too late to start thinking about your CV when you see an opportunity that interests you. You should have a CV ready to be adapted for any openings that come your way. Preparing ahead of time allows you to identify any gaps or weaknesses in your CV so that you can do something about them. Building a good CV can take time so it’s never too early to learn what is involved.

I already have a CV I'm proud of. Will this course help me?

Yes, it will. A CV needs to be adapted for every opportunity. You shouldn’t send the same CV out each time. We will show you how to do this and how to read job advertisements so you understand what might need to change in your CV. Writing a CV is not the end of the process of preparing to apply for a job. You also need to write a good cover letter that works with your CV to highlight why you should be considered for a role. We will also show you how to promote your CV.

You can check whether your CV follows our tips for CV Writing by reading our post on the do’s and don’t’s of CV Writing.
